Camp Lejeune Target? |

Camp Lejeune, NC, ICW |

Army Offshore Munitions Terminal |
|
Onslow Beach Bridge, Camp Lejeune |
We filled the water tanks, and were away from the dock and
entering the ICW at Southport by 0800.
At around 0900 we passed the Sunny Point Army Military Ocean Terminal,
home of the largest ammunition port in the U.S.
Its three large docks and massive cranes were replete with gunboats and
signs declaring that the taxpayers who funded such an installation were not
welcome to visit! We turned out of the
Cape Fear River about 0925, and by 0945 had reached the Snows Cut Bridge. We were at Wrightsville by 1110, and the
Figure 8 Swing Island Bridge by 1140. We
reached the Surf City Bridge about 1325, but since it opens only on the hour,
had to wait until 1400 for an opening. We
reached the New River Inlet by 1550, and around 1600 were entering Mile Hammock
Bay, otherwise known as the Camp Lejeune anchorage. This anchorage is surrounded by Camp Lejeune,
home of a great deal of the U.S. Marine Corps amphibious training. This was a large, great anchorage, and we were joined each evening by a couple of sailboats.

Soccer or Basketball? |

Pepto Bismol, anyone? |
After a couple of days at anchor, we pulled up the anchor from the soupiest, foulest, blackest mud you ever saw. We moved north to Morehead City, passing some very intriguing sights along the way.

Interesting ICW Sights |
|
Sand Bar Party, NC ICW |
On entering the Morehead
City area (Saturday of Labor
Day weekend), we traveled
"upstream" into a great group
of over 200 boats! We finally arrived at the Morehead City Yacht Basing, vowing once again not to travel on weekends!
